On the second Tuesday of each month you can catch the VB Jaycees at their General Member Meeting. Typically we’re upstairs at Rockefeller’s at 630pm with Happy Hour drink specials and the room to ourselves. Be sure to follow us on Facebook to stay up-to-date on the latest meeting, though!
This month we welcomed the new officers (each year we nominate and vote on a new Board of Directors). Each person can only serve in that particular for two consecutive years so every December-January there is a transition period for new and leaving board members.
We also honor at least one member at each meeting with the Jaycee of the Month award! This member is a dedicated team player who really shined the month before. For January we honored Marissa Nihill. Marissa stepped up as interim President after the sudden passing of Brooke Briggs, and is leading the charge for 2017, too. Looking forward to a great year under your leadership, Marissa!
Since Valentine’s Day landed on our typical GMM time, we slide the meeting over one day to the 15th in case any one was busy celebrating the day of love. This month was all about planning for Brooke’s Bash that we had coming up in March. We also had a special visitor – Dee from Coastal Edge swung by to rev us up for the 55th #surfversary of ECSC!
Sheila Gray secured the Jaycee of the Month honor for their hard work on the Anti-Valentine’s Day Fundraiser; through the raffle and the monthly proceeds from Wasserhund Brewery, we secured some much needed funds for the organization to jump start our year. Thanks, Sheila!
March was all about Brooke. In her honor the VB Jaycees developed and founded an annual scholarship in her name. To kick off the fundraising – we collaborated with LifeNet Health during their annual 5k with a race team AND hosted the after-party across the street.
For all her hardwork with both the 5k and Brooke’s Scholarship, we gave the Jaycee of the Month to Morgan Burgess. Even though she might work for LifeNet Health already, she was a rockstar in our planning and organizing for the VB Jaycees.
This month we gave out TWO Jaycees of the Month – Ashley and Amy were the co-chairs for Ultimate Frisbee – one of our fundraising weekends where we support the USA Ultimate team and their Beach Championships.
During the May GMM we presented a check to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network for the funds we raised during our event in April. Marissa and her team led the charge in both the walk team and after-party at YNot Pizza and we gave PanCan over $3,000 to toward funding research for a cure. Way to go Jaycees!
The May Jaycee of the Month was given to Kayte Hamilton, our 2017 VP of Marketing and Communications. Kayte is a constant face at nearly all of our events and throws in 110% to her duties. In the words of the 2017 Management VP, “We wish we could all be a bit more like Kayte.”
New member! Rob Smith decided to go for it and swore in at the May GMM. We’re lucky to have you, Rob!
Once summer hits, most of us are in the ECSC zone. 2017’s ECSC Chairperson, Charlie Pitts, updated us on all things headed our way this summer.
Party on July! The VB Jaycees nabbed the hot spot Courtney Terrace at the VB Hilton Oceanfront for this GMM. There was a free concert going on outside and downstairs at Neptune’s Park and the terrace gave us a view from above (with a private bartender). This doubled as our monthly social and meet’n’greet and was a huge success.
Before we got too busy with the tunes, we honored David Lamb with the Jaycee of the Month Award. David is one of those people who has so much enthusiasm for every venture he tackles. In June he led the charge for our annual Clean the Bay Day team and more than 70 pounds of trash was collected along the Rudee Inlet. David is also working really hard gearing up for Walk to End ALZ which happens in September. The VB Jaycees will join him to collect signatures and support funding for finding an ALZ cure.
Back at our usual meet up space, the August GMM is always all about ECSC. The Jaycees own and operate the annual surf championship as a team a dedicated volunteers. It takes a LOT of time, sweat and energy to put together the feat and the Jaycees bring it every year.
Since our Jaycee of the Month award is typically awarded to someone who was outstanding in the month prior – we decided to honor the late Brooke Briggs with the August award. Brooke was much more than just a past Jaycees President before she passed away last August – she was dedicated member of society who poured her hear out helping others. With her birthday being in July and ECSC was both her favorite and last event she attended being her passing, it just seemed natural to gift her family with the award. For more information on how the Jaycees honor Brooke, check out her scholarship page here.
We also inducted one new member into the organization at the August GMM! Kristen visited, liked what she saw and stepped up to swear in by reciting our creed. Welcome to the family!
